Transkei Huts

Traditional Xhosa Homes are made out of clay and straw that comes from the area.  Although there is quite a few houses in the Old Transkei that has more modern tendencies – many homes are still quite traditional.  They are painted in various colors – ranging from a sea-green, white, orange and various others.  When one of the head-member dies – its traditional that the home will also be left unattended – until its totally disintegrated.  The Xhosas live mostly from the produce of their own farm which mainly grows mielies and they keep stock like goats, sheep, cattle and chicken – very few are commercial farmers
